Phenom U: Amari Latimer — Built in the Peach State
Phenom U is our roster of next-level athletes carrying the brand from high school fields to college Saturdays. Today we're proud to add a name that's been written into Georgia high school football history.
Welcome to Phenom U, Amari Latimer
If you've followed Georgia high school football the last four years, you already know the name. Amari Latimer — 6'0", 215 pounds out of Tyrone, Georgia — isn't just another four-star running back headed to a Power Four program. He's the greatest player to ever wear a Sandy Creek Patriots uniform, and now he's the newest member of the Phenom U family on his way to West Virginia.
The Backstory: Built in the Peach State
Amari's story doesn't start with a recruiting ranking. It starts with a kid in Fairburn, Georgia who showed up to Sandy Creek as a freshman and immediately put 648 yards and 7 touchdowns on the board. That was the opening chapter.
By the time he finished high school, Amari had rewritten the Sandy Creek record book in permanent ink:
- 5,332+ career rushing yards — the most in school history
- 74 rushing touchdowns over three full varsity seasons
- Single-game school records for rushing yards (287) and rushing TDs (7)
- 2025 Region 2-3A Player of the Year
- 2024 Region 2-3A Offensive Player of the Year
- 13-0 senior season with a run to the 3A state semifinals
- USA Today All-USA Southeast honoree
And that's just football. Amari is a four-time state champion when you add in his basketball hardware — three straight Peach State AAA titles with Sandy Creek hoops, including MVP honors in the 2025 championship game. The kid runs an 11.5 in the 100m for fun. Multi-sport, multi-threat, no off-switch.
The Recruitment: Every Blue Blood Came Calling
Ohio State. Georgia. Michigan. Auburn. Florida. Penn State. USC. Texas. Notre Dame. Oregon. Tennessee. Miami. Florida State. The list of programs that offered Amari reads like a CFP bracket.
He originally committed to Wisconsin back in June — where his older brother Geimere plays defensive back — and the Badgers fought hard to keep him. Ohio State surged. Miami and Tennessee made late pushes. Georgia Tech tried to keep him in-state. But on National Signing Day, Amari did something only the most confident kids in the country do: he flipped his commitment and bet on himself with West Virginia. The Mountaineers landed one of the biggest signing day shockers in the country, and Amari heads to Morgantown as the centerpiece of their 2026 backfield build.
